In August 2022, the seasonally adjusted volume of retail trade decreased by 0.3% in the euro area and by 0.2% in the EU, compared with July 2022, according to estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In July 2022, the retail trade volume decreased by 0.4% in the euro area and by 0.2% in the EU. In August 2022 compared with August 2021, the calendar adjusted retail sales index decreased by 2.0% in the euro area and by 1.3% in the EU.
Monthly comparison by retail sector and by Member State
In the euro area in August 2022, compared with July 2022, the volume of retail trade decreased by 0.8% for food, drinks and tobacco, while it increased by 0.2% for non-food products and by 3.2% for automotive fuels. In the EU, the volume of retail trade decreased by 0.6% for food, drinks and tobacco, while it increased by 0.1% for non-food products and by 2.9% for automotive fuels.
Among Member States for which data are available, the largest monthly decreases in the total retail trade volume were registered in the Netherlands (-2.2%), Germany (-1.3%) and Malta (-1.1%). The highest increases were observed in Slovenia (+7.0%), Luxembourg (+3.8%) and Ireland (+3.5%).
Annual comparison by retail sector and by Member State
In the euro area in August 2022, compared with August 2021, the volume of retail trade decreased by 3.0% for non-food products and by 2.0% for food, drinks and tobacco, while it grew by 5.1% for automotive fuels. In the EU, the retail trade volume decreased by 2.6% for non-food products and by 1.3% for food, drinks and tobacco, while it grew by 5.5% for automotive fuels.
Among Member States for which data are available, the largest yearly decreases in the total retail trade volume were registered in Denmark (-6.0%), the Netherlands (-5.8%) and Finland (-4.7%). The highest increases were observed in Slovenia (+31.8%), Poland (+8.0%) and Cyprus (+5.1%).
