  • Number of foreigners with a temporary residence title for employment purposes up 19% on the previous year
  • EU Blue Card the most frequent type of residence title as regards temporary labour migration
  • Number of foreign skilled workers with vocational training up 44% on the previous year

At the end of 2022, approximately 351,000 people from countries outside the European Union (EU) who had a temporary residence title for employment purposes were registered in Germany in the Central Register of Foreigners (AZR). The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that the number of labour migrants who came to Germany from non-EU countries has risen steadily since 2010, when it stood at 85,000. In 2020 and 2021, the years severely impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, the year-on-year increase was relatively small (2021: +21,000 people or +8%; 2020: +16,000 people or +6%). In 2022, by contrast, the number of labour migrants rose by 56,000 or 19%. Since many Covid-19 restrictions were lifted in 2022, catch-up effects may have been one of the reasons for the large increase.
