AI-powered language model ChatGPT by OpenAI is being used by job seekers to produce cover letters and resumes, allowing those who lack strong writing skills to create content easily. ChatGPT’s dataset of 570 billion words allows the AI-powered tool to generate convincing, formulaic, and clean language for cover letters and resumes. Recruiters understand the reliance on generative AI tools and are likely to shift towards evaluating candidates based on their soft skills and cultural fit during interviews, rather than cover letters and resumes. Furthermore, hiring managers may introduce harder assessments to evaluate creative and abstract thought from the candidate.

This could mean a greater emphasis on evaluating candidates’ skills and personality traits through skill- and personality assessments that use data-driven behavioral insights to match candidates against vacancies and reveal their soft skills. As more job seekers use generative AI to compose their written materials, the importance of cover letters and resumes is becoming less relevant. Recruiters may now look to social media and LinkedIn profiles to understand the personality of candidates. The use of generative AI in job applications may also lead to a shift in job applications as we know them, moving recruiters away from traditional modes of evaluating candidates. Furthermore, employers may introduce harder assessments that test and evaluate what the machines can’t do. As generative AI can only work with what already exists, assessments may demand more creative and abstract thought from the candidate. In summary, generative AI is changing the hiring process, and experts believe standard hiring processes may change as a result.
