Concentration in Construction Industry in Brazil falls to less than half in 10 years

  • From 2012 to 2021, the concentration in the Construction Industry in Brazil had a marked reduction: in 2012, the eight largest companies represented 10.8% of the sector, while in 2021, the participation of the eight leading companies retreated to 4.3%.
  • In 2021, the country had 147,400 Construction companies, which employed 2.2 million persons. Compared to 2020, the number of employed persons in the sector grew by 11.4%, the highest annual percentage change since 2010. In the same comparison, the number of Construction companies grew by 11.7%, the highest annual rate since 2013.
  • Among the segments of Construction, the sector of Specialized services for construction had the highest increase in the number of employed persons: 17.9%. Employment in the Works and Infrastructure sector fell by 0.6%.
  • The value generated by the Construction sector reached R$377.8 billion in 2021, of which R$355.8 billion in works and/or services and R$22.0 billion in developments, works and/or services (5.8%).
  • Total salaries and other compensation in Construction was R$ 67.2 billion, with highlight to the Works and infrastructure sector, with 36.5% of this amount.
  • In terms of minimum wages, the average monthly wage in Construction fell to the lowest level in the series that started in 2007: 2.1 minimum wages in 2021.
  • From 2012 to 2021, there was a drop of 22.9% (or 654.4 thousand less persons) in the number of jobs in the Construction Industry. The Construction of Buildings segment lost 31.7% (375 thousand fewer jobs) and the Infrastructure Works segment dropped 33.6% (322.9 thousand fewer jobs). Employment in specialized services for construction increased by 6.1% (43.5 thousand more persons).
  • In 2021, works demanded by the private sector represented 74.4% of the total value of construction works and/or services, the highest participation in the time series.
