Sectoral Confidence Indices, January 2020 in Turkey

Seasonally adjusted confidence index increased by 2.2% in both services and retail trade sectors and increased by 14.6% in construction sector in January compared to the previous month.

Services confidence index realized as 95.2

Seasonally adjusted confidence index which was 93.2 for services in December increased by 2.2% in January to 95.2. In services sector compared to the previous month, demand-turnover expectation over next three months index increased by 1.1% to 101.6. Business situation over past three months and demand-turnover over past three months indices increased by 2.6% and 3% respectively to 92.2 and 91.9.

Retail trade confidence index realized as 105

Seasonally adjusted retail trade confidence index increased by 2.2% in January to 105. In retail trade sector compared to the previous month, current volume of stock index increased by 1.7% to 111.1. Business activity-sales expectation over next three months and business activity-sales over past three months indices increased by 3.8% and 1.3% respectively to 105.7 and 98.1.

Construction confidence index realized as 78.9

Seasonally adjusted construction confidence index which was 68.9 in previous month increased by 14.6% in January to 78.9. In construction sector compared to the previous month, total employment expectation over next three months index increased by 4.6% to 93.3. Current overall order books index became 64.6 by increasing 33%.

In construction sector, 68% of the enterprises indicated at least one factor limiting their activities while 32% of the enterprises indicated none. Among the main factors limiting activities in construction sector; “financial constraints” which was 44.4% in December realized as 48.5% in January, “insufficient demand” which was 43.3% in December realized as 36.1% in January and “weather conditions” which was 7.9% in December realized as 15.5% in January.

Sectoral confidence indices can take value between 0 and 200. It indicates an optimistic outlook when the index is above 100, but it indicates a pessimistic outlook when it is below 100.
